Protect your eyes | www.womenlovehealth.blogspot.com
Your eyes are an important part of your body and health. It is a major sensory part which uses to see the world. Many people around the world faces eye problems. Dust in the environment, bad eating habits, stress on eyes etc are the common causes for eye problem. Some problems can be treated with glasses or contact lenses but some problems may defect your vision permanently. Therefore it is important to protect your eyes in any environment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that an estimated 180 million people worldwide are visually impaired, and of these, between 40 and 45 million persons are blind (WHO 2004).

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR VISION

(1) You should have a dilated eye exam to detect any problem in your eyes. In dilation test, pupils are dilated or widen with drops. Dilating the pupil allows more light to enter the eye the same way opening a door allows light into a dark room. Once dilated, each eye is examined using a special magnifying lens that provides a clear view of important tissues at the back of the eye, including the retina, the macula, and the optic nerve.

The importance of dilated eye exam is that many common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration often have no warning signs. A dilated eye exam is the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages.

(2) Know your family’s eye health history. Eye problems may be hereditary. So it is important to talk to your family members about the history of their eye health. This will help to determine if you are at higher risk for developing an eye disease or condition.

(3) Good eating habit is important for your eyes and eat right to protect your sight. Eating a nutrition rich diet which includes fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens is great for keeping your eyes healthy.

Omega-3 fatty acid is also good for your eye's health. You can find omega-3 fatty acid in fishes like Salmon, tuna and halibut.

(4) Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity may increases your risk of diseases like diabetes which may lead to eye disease or glaucoma. To maintain a healthy weight you need to do regular exercise and eat good food. Avoid junk food or oily food and eat  more fruits and vegetables.

High blood sugar damages the blood vessels in the retina (a light-sensitive part of the eye), where scarring can cause permanent vision loss.

(5) Wear protective eye wear. Wear protective eye wear when playing sports or doing activities around the home to avoid any injury. Protective eye wear includes safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards specially designed to provide the correct protection for a certain activity.

(6) Avoid or Quit Smoking. As you know smoking is bad for your health, it is bad for your eyes also. Smoking is related with the age related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness.

(7) Wear Sunglasses. Sunglasses protects you from sun's UV rays and wears as a fashion accessory. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

(8) Give your eyes a rest often. Sometimes you forget to blink while watching TV or working on computer. It makes your eyes tired and may get fatigued. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain.

(9) Maintain proper hygiene. Clean and sanitized your hands and your contact lenses properly. To avoid the risk of infection, always wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Make sure to disinfect contact lenses as instructed and replace them as appropriate.

(10) Practice eye safety at workplace. Employers are required to provide a safe work environment. When protective eye wear is required as a part of your job, make a habit of wearing the appropriate type at all times and encourage your coworkers to do the same.

Light around your work area is also crucial for your eyes. Low light condition put stress on your eyes. This can happen at your workplace or at home. So maintain good light condition at work.

It is good to take care of your eyes. Your eyes faces many problems on a regular basis like, dust, stress, work related injuries etc. So it needs proper care all the time. Go to your doctor and get examined for any eye disease. It is the only way to find any problem in your eyes.

Eating good is also necessary for your eye health. Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants etc are required for your eyes. If you focus on your food and adapt good eating habits. There are some exercises for your eyes which your doctor can teach you.

Best Tips To Do Eye Care

Eyes are the important and delicate parts of the human body. Your eating habits can influence it's health. Good food is very important for your eyes. We all know how important it is to keep our bodies fit by keeping active and maintaining a regular exercise routine. But, did you know that you can exercise your eyes as well?

Eye exercises are designed to strengthen your eye muscles, improve focusing, eye movements, and stimulate the vision center of your brain. While there is no scientific proof that eye exercises will improve your eyesight, they may help to counteract existing eye problems you may have and maintain your current eyesight level.

Preparing Your Eyes for Exercise

Talk to your eye doctor and get your eyes health checkup. Talk to your optometrist about eye exercises. Your optometrist can then tell you if you have any existing eye problems or issues. Studies suggest that eye exercises may or may not help the eyes to heal.

There are some points worth noticing that-

1. Eye exercises will not cure or solve eye issues like myopia (nearsightedness), presbyopia (an inability to change focus from far to near), or astigmatism (blurred vision due to the shape of your cornea)

2. There are no accurate studies suggests that eye exercises can make your vision good and throw away your glasses.

3. There is no harm in trying these eye exercises if you do not have any eye conditions that will be aggravated by prolonged use of your eyes. But if you have serious eye conditions like cataracts, blindness in one or both eyes, or a recovering cornea injury, avoid doing these exercises.

Palm On Your Eyes

Doing this will reduce stimuli to your eyes and brain. Closing your eyes and applying light pressure to them will spread the tear film in your eyes evenly and relax them.

- Sit comfortably in a chair. Rub your hands together until they feel warm.

- Close your eyes and cover them lightly with your cupped palms. Avoid applying pressure to your eyeballs. Your nose should not be covered to ensure you have enough ventilation during the palming.

- Make sure no light can enter your eyes though gaps between your fingers or the edges of your palms and nose. Light will stimulate, rather than relax your eyes, and deter the process of relaxation. Imagine deep blackness and focus on it.

- Take deep breaths slowly and evenly while thinking of a calming scene, like an empty beach, a clear lake, or a still mountain. Once you see nothing but blackness, remove your palms from your eyes.

- Repeat the palming for 3 minutes or more.

A. Massage Your Eyes

This will help to improve blood circulation around your eyes and face, and prepare your eyes for exercise.

- Apply a hot and cold compress. Soak a towel in warm water, and a towel in cold water. Place the warm towel on your face, making sure it drapes over your eyebrows, closed eyelids, and cheeks.

- After three minutes, remove the warm towel and place the cold towel on your face. Alternate between the two towels as desired, making sure to end with a cold compress.

- Alternating temperatures on your face will cause vasoconstriction and vasodilation, physiological changes that will stimulate your face and the skin around your eyes.

B. Do A Full Face Massage

Soak a towel in warm water. Rub your neck, forehead and cheeks with the towel. Then, use your fingertips to gently massage your forehead and closed eyes.

C. Do An Eyelid Massage

Wash your hands well. Then, close your eyes and massage them with circular movements of your fingers for 1-2 minutes. Make sure you press very lightly on your eyes as you massage them. Light pressure will help to stimulate your eyes.

D. Near And Far Focusing

Strengthen your eyes near and far focusing. This exercise will strengthen the muscles in your eyes and help you maintain your current vision level.

Sit in a chair or stand in front of a blank wall. Place your thumb about 10 inches in front of your face and focus on it. You can also focus on an object that is 5-10 feet away for 10-15 seconds.

Then, focus on an object that is 10-20 feet in front of you without moving your head. Focus on the object for 10-15 seconds.

After 10-15 seconds, re focus on your thumb. Practice this 5 times.

E. Zooming With Your Eyes

Practice zooming with your eyes. This is a good eye focusing exercise, as you have to constantly adjust how well you can focus on an object from certain distances.

Sit in a comfortable position.

Stretch out your arm with your thumb in the hitchhiking position (thumbs up).

Focus on your thumb. Then, bring the thumb closer to you, focusing until your thumb is about 3 inches in front of your face.

Move your thumb away again until your arm is fully outstretched.

Repeat this exercise three more times, once a week.

F. Rhythmic Eye Movements

Practice rhythmic eye movements. These movements can help to strengthen your eyes and your hand eye coordination.

G. Check Bar Swings

Do bar swings. Bar swings help to test your brain's ability to focus on an object with your eyes and maintain your balance and coordination.

Stand in front of a fence, barred window, or something else with evenly spaced vertical lines. Focus on a distant object on the other side of the bars. Relax your body and transfer your weight from one foot to the other. Keep your breathing steady and relaxed. Don't forget to blink while performing this exercise. Continue for 2-3 minutes.

H. Round Swings

Do round swings. This exercise helps to strengthen your peripheral vision. Focus on an object in the distance that is close to the ground. Sway as instructed for Bar Swings. Keeping your gaze on the same object, use your peripheral vision to observe your surroundings as you sway. Continue for 2-3 minutes.

I. End With Palming

Always finish up either with palming to relax your eyes after your intense exercise session.

You can also end your eye workout by simply closing your eyes and keeping them shut in a dark, quiet room for several minutes. Let them cool down and rest.

Food To Make your Eyes Healthier

You should eat different fruits and vegetables to get nutritions for your eyes health. Good food can supports your eyes exercises and make them healthy.

Eat carrots,Leafy Greens, Eggs, Citrus, Berries, Almonds and Fishes.

You get Omega-3 fatty acid from fishes. Fresh fruits and vegetables has more antioxidants and vitamins. Vitamin A is crucial for your eye health. Leafy greens are very important to get vitamin A.
